The Ontario NDP's Forestry Strategy
Room to Grow
Ontario’s forestry sector supports good jobs, builds strong communities, and provides the materials we need to build more homes. But after years of mill closures, under-harvesting, and growing pressure from U.S. tariffs, workers and Northern communities need a government that treats forestry like the strategic industry it is.

Good jobs. Strong communities.
Ontario's Forestry has room to grow
Forestry contributes billions to Ontario’s economy and supports tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs across the province. These are stable, good-paying jobs that support families, local businesses, public services, and regional economies.Ontario has the resources, workers, and expertise to grow this sector. What’s missing is a government willing to protect jobs, strengthen domestic supply chains, and make forestry part of a real industrial strategy.

Ontario wood. Ontario homes.
Build Ontario’s future with Ontario wood
Ontario is facing a housing crisis. At the same time, our forestry sector can supply the lumber, mass timber, insulation, interior finishings, and manufactured wood products needed to build more homes and public infrastructure.Ontario wood should be helping build Ontario homes. By prioritizing made-in-Ontario forest products in housing, infrastructure, and public procurement, we can create good jobs, strengthen local supply chains, and build more of what people need.

Defend workers now
Stand up to U.S. tariffs
The United States is Ontario’s most important forestry market. New tariffs are putting more pressure on workers, mills, and communities already facing uncertainty. Ontario needs immediate action to defend jobs, stabilize mills, and protect our publicly managed forestry system.
Stronger supply chains
Use more Ontario-made forest products
From lumber and mass timber to insulation, furnishings, and interior finishings, Ontario-made forest products should be part of how we build homes, schools, long-term care homes, and public infrastructure across the province.

The future of forestry
Grow the next generation of forestry jobs
Ontario can lead in sustainable forestry, modern fibre products, biomass, mass timber, and value-added manufacturing. That means using more of the tree, wasting less fibre, keeping mills open, and creating new jobs in the communities that have powered this sector for generations.
Partnership and sustainability
Support Indigenous economic participation
A stronger forestry sector must be built through meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities. That means supporting Indigenous ownership, revenue-sharing, knowledge-sharing, and long-term stewardship rooted in rights, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
